Day 12: Pump Up the Volume

Yesterday the Chicago Cubs announced that they have signed Jon Leiber to a one year contract worth a bunch million dollars. In announcing the acquisition, General Manger Jim Hendry said, "We're trying to get as much volume as we can, depth-wise, in the rotation to make it more competitive in camp. We're trying to accumulate as many quality pitchers as we can. We think he adds a lot still to our club."

This would be Leiber's second time around pitching for the Cubs. He last pitched for them during the 1999-2002 seasons, and is the last Cub's pitcher to win 20 games in a season. Leiber was well liked by the players and fans and like an old record that needs another listen, I guess the Cubs' decided to click the "repeat" button on him.

The old baseball adage is you can never have enough "good" pitching, and with Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis, Dempster, Marshall, Hart, and Guzman, Mr. Hendry's statement of "We're trying to get as much volume as we can..." is indeed in play. Now, whether or not they're "good" is a whole other topic.

Some days, you hear a song, and you just can't get it out of your head. Some songs have such an unique sound that even twenty years later, the mention of one single word, "volume" can trigger something in your memory.

Such is the case for "Pump up the Volume" today's BSOD. Released in 1987, with their hip-hop sampling stylings, "Pump up the Volume" made it to the #1 spot in UK, and #13 on the USA Billboard's single's chart.
